Republicans are alternating between criticizing their leaders in the House, downplaying the setbacks this week, and trying to figure out how to get beyond the disasters. Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and provide military assistance to Israel via floor votes on two bills on Tuesday night, but he was unsuccessful in front of the public. There is no doubting the humiliation, but several members claimed they give Johnson a pass since he is new to the position, according to The Hill. One person said, "That was a very enormous failure." Someone another said, "Anyone who claims it was a good night for Republicans in the House is not being honest."

Republicans were disappointed if they expected Johnson to take responsibility for the disruption. He said, "I do not believe this is a reflection on the leader." "It is a meditation on the physical form itself, and our current position in this nation." Politico reported that several members offered Johnson cover, with one stating he had no issues with conducting the impeachment vote and another saying, "If it makes us appear dysfunctional, I can think of many more instances than that." However, there was bitterness among Republicans who dissented from the party stance.

For instance, departing Representative Ken Buck's vote against impeachment irked Rep. Ralph Norman. Ken Buck is stepping down. That is beyond me," Norman said. "He had the option to do it only for the Republican Party." As he works to get more support to attempt again on both proposals the following week, Johnson maintained that his caucus is proceeding as planned. Rep. Byron Donalds said, "When things do not go right on the floor, you have got to analyze your leadership team and find out what went wrong." "Nevertheless, you also need to move on to the next task at hand. You can not think about it too much. I am not.
